Birthplace & Family

Born to Porter (deceased in 1968) & Edna Simpson in Jeffersonville, Indiana.  Both mom and dad were from Kentucky, dad born in Lexington and mom in Campbellsville.  Mom has been married to Ray Hackl since 1972. Dad Hackl passed away in August 2006, mom now lives in Sun City West, Arizona.  I have one younger brother Ray, who lives in Surprise, AZ with his wife Ramona.  I also have an older half-brother, Ron Simpson who lives in New Albany, Indiana.

So What Have I Been Doing Since Birth?

Dad's job took us all over the United States, or so it seemed.  We lived in Kentucky, Indiana, Louisiana, Texas, Nevada, Arizona, and Ohio.  We lived in multiple cities in most of those states too!  Sometime in 1964 we moved from New Albany Indiana to Cincinnati Ohio where finally it seemed as though we were somewhat settled. Woodward Diploma We were settled long enough for me to  graduate from Woodward High School.

Yea...Go Bulldogs!!!

Shortly after High School I enlisted into the US Air Force and Uncle Sam spared no expense to send me to:
Lackland AFB, TX Basic Training 1969
Chanute AFB, IL 1969
Luke AFB, AZ A few months in 1969
Phan Rang Viet Nam 1969-1970
Yokota AB, Japan 1970-1972
Randolph AFB, TX 1972-1976
As a bonus I was sent on temporary duty to places like Osan AB Korea, Pusan AB Korea, & a return trip to Viet Nam at Cam Rahn Air Base.
1976 Honorably discharged from the Air Force.

In 1970 while stationed in Japan I met Kim.  I had a part-time job washing dishes at the NCO club and Kim was a waitress.  Kim was there with her family, her father was career Air Force and also stationed at Yokota.  Anyway, Kim liked the way I washed dishes and decided we were going to get married and so we did in December 1971.  Isn't that romantic?

In 1972 we left Japan for my next assignment to Randolph AFB, Texas.  It was while we were at Randolph that we had our first child, Emerson in March 1973.  So Emerson is a Texan that was actually made in Japan.

1976 after being discharged from the Air Force, we moved to Phoenix Arizona.  Attended a couple community colleges while working full-time.  While in Phoenix, Chris, our second son, was born in 1978.  About 1979 Kim enlisted in the Air Force.  Her first assignment was Randolph AFB in San Antonio and so we moved back to familiar territory.

Eventually, I go to school long enough to graduate with a BSAS (Bachelor of Science Applied Sociology "Do you want fries with that?") from Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas.  The school is now named Texas State University .  Went on to graduate school at the same university for a year before Kim received an assignment to Yokota AB Japan where we first met and were married.  So in 1985, we packed up kids and bags and departed for Japan where we remained for 6 years.

1991 the Simpson clan leaves Yokota AB Japan for Headquarters US European Command in Stuttgart Germany.  We spent 4 years in Germany enjoying every moment.  In 1995 Kim was then given an assignment to Offutt AFB, Nebraska just outside Omaha.  I began working for the Defense Automated Printing Service in 1995.  Remained with DAPS until 2001 when my job was lost to what is fondly referred to as a "RIF" (reduction in force). If that wasn't enough, just months before my job ended, I was sent to the hospital for some tests and the next thing I understood was they would not release me until the surgeon cracked open by chest to do bypass surgery; apparently I had left main artery disease.  Ouch!  That was really unexpected and frightening but I survived the ordeal with a few complications along the way.

In October 2003, I began working for the University of Nebraska at Omaha in the Facilities Management & Planning department.

Birthplace & Family

Born to Tom & Marcella Hands in Belleville, Illinois.  My mother "Mickey", as she was called by her friends, succumbed to skin cancer in May, 2005.  Dad continues to live in San Antonio, TX where he and mom lived for many years.  Dad is a proud World War II veteran.  You can take a look at the WWII memorial web page or click HERE.  I have 4 younger brothers: Rick who lives with his wife Beth in Santa Fe, NM, Ken who lives in San Antonio, TX., Michael who is deceased, and Kevin, also living in San Antonio.

So What Have I Been Doing Since Birth?

Like Don, my Dad's job (career Air Force) also took us all over the United States.  We lived in Illinois, Minnesota, Texas, New Mexico, Kansas, Delaware, North and South Carolina, Arizona and three trips to Japan.  While in Japan on my Dad's last overseas assignment, I graduated from Johnson High School.  As Don said, he and I met at the NCO Club and it wasn't the way he washed dishes; he tried to tell me I was pretty in Spanish and that's what made me decide he was the one for me.  Now, isn't that more romantic?

A couple of years after Don got out of the Air Force, I decided to enlist and I ended up in the Air Force for the long haul.  After assignments to Randolph AFB and Brooks AFB, TX, we went to Japan for 6 years followed immediately by an assignment to Hq. European Command at Patch Barracks located in the beautiful city of Stuttgart, Germany.  We had a 4 year assignment and enjoyed most every moment.    Once our tour was up at Stuttgart, we were then assigned to Offutt AFB, Nebraska!  Well we NEVER entertained the thought of working and living anywhere near Nebraska but we have remained here since my retirement from the Air Force in 1999.   After my retirement in 1999, I went to work as a contractor for Sterling Software and after several company buy-outs, I now work for Northrop Grumman as a Quality Assurance Engineer.  I worked off-base for several years and am now back in my pre-retirement stomping grounds working on Offutt AFB with many of the people I knew before I retired.
